Why I CHOSE a C-Section

“I had a c-section.” Every time you say that sentence you are immediately met with the same kind of questions or statements. “Emergency? Oh Isomeone I know, had to have an emergency C-section” “oh, I was worried about that. Luckily I was able to have a natural birth.” Now I don’t even pause I just immediately follow it up with… “by choice.” The truth is, vaginal birth never even crossed my mind as an option.

Have you ever asked if you can have an elective C-section?

Have you ever talked about it in a group setting?

Even discussing it is met with hushed tones and disapproval. Mom shamed is an understatement. I was questioned at every single turn, most people I talked to didn’t even know you could ask.

I was told about risks every single time I brought it up, which I had thoroughly researched and understood. One doctor I saw wouldn’t even discuss it with me and became almost standoffish every time I brought it up, I learned that advocating for yourself is the most important thing to do.

My birth wasn’t any less natural because it’s what came naturally to me. I’m not any less of a mother because they used a scalpel, I’m a mother because I love my child with my entire existence.

Lyric was welcomed to the world on November 5, 2018. My husband was at my side and was able to snap this epic photo.

I have no shame in my birth story. It's mine.
